New Addition to the Family
Welcome to Sparks, the latest edition to our small household.
I adopted him yesterday from the shelter in Genoa. He's a needly little guy and quite the talker, but he's sweet and adorable. (This is the best picture I have, I can't get him to stand still long enough!)

no strike to spare
So the Broadway strike has come to an end today. I guess the city of New York has been breathing down the necks of both sides, as it's costing the city and local businesses millions with Broadway dark. In reading the New York Times article about it, it seems that the compromises were fairly reasonable.
Looks like they basically agreed that the number of crew at load-in could be a lot more flexible, that pre- and post-show calls could be extended some without initiating a minimum call (I.E. so they could call crew at an hour and a half to show and not have to pay a full four-hour minimum for that extra half hour.) In exchange for some of the concessions made on the behalf of the Union, the techs will see a higher than standard pay raise.
Dammit, I want a pay raise! I'd go on strike, but no one would give a damn.
I don't see anything terribly earth-shattering here, but some of the fall-out remains to be seen. I just hope it doesn't start to establish a precedence of justifying cutting into job security with paying more per hour. The temporary contract will be voted on by the members of Local 1 in the middle of December.

hell of a time to be in entertainment
::crawls out from under rock::
As those of you who pay attention to the news may or may not know, IATSE Local One (Broadway stage technicians) has gone on strike. Add that to the Writer's Guild strike, and it's a hell of time to be in the entertainment industry.
I can't say that I blame anyone involved in either of these strikes, but it's a shame that the parties have been unable or unwilling to come to an agreement before this measure was taken.
Regardless, I'm going to be paying close attention to how these strikes play out and the changes made to their respective contracts, because I know that it will have important ramifications for all of us working in the industry, especially those of us on a contract basis.

Apparently I'm moving out of my parents house. We found a place that we liked earlier this week, applied and got it. We're signing the lease tomorrow and probably moving in week after next.
Something I've wanted so bad for more than a year is finally here and I'm scared shitless.

OMG I LOVE WIDGETS.
Holy webpage layout made easy, Batman!
I'm absolutely in love with Sidebar Widgets in WordPress. I'm a big fan of how you can rearrange items on your website with the click and drag of a mouse and be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be.
That said, I really need to stop futzing with my webpage right now and go to bed.
Boy is it nice to be excited about something again. I'm back in that "I could stay up all night working on this" mode again. I missed it.

Device Envy
Literally days after I get my shiny new Treo 700p, Apple announces the iPhone.
OH MY GOD THE SEXY.
Now, the question is, who will be cool enough to carry it, and how incredibly expensive is it going to be? Oh, and will they make enough to meet what I'm pretty sure will be high demand? (as far as Apple hardware goes, anyway.)
UPDATE: Looks like it'll be carried by Cingular and retail at $499-$599 (4GB/8GB)
That's, actually, not bad...

Stranger than Fiction
Stranger than Fiction is one of the first and best original movies out of Hollywood in a long, long time. I'm serious. E and I caught the last showing after work last night and it was so very, very good.
Will Ferrell has finally been cast in a role that allows him to show off more than his ability to be a crazy cheerleader. Fiction has a simple but elegant story with small cast of rich and powerful characters. It's not a laugh-a-minute riot, but it's not a slow, cerebral flick, either. It's the common ground between mainstream comedy and the likes of I <3 Huckabees. It has the opportunity to walk down the existentialist path, but it pulls back to a more humanist, and more visceral end. Everything's not happy-go-lucky, but there's hope.
I can't speak for many others, but I have to admit that during times of drama in my life, I can't help but think that I'm living in some sort of story, be it film, play, or novel. It sympathizes with the insecurities that people feel in their lives, and is a subtle reaffirmation that we are not alone. There's a great series of scenes in which Harold Crick (Ferrell) is trying to determine whether his life is a comedy or a tragedy. Who hasn't wondered that? Especially when they're feeling that it's the latter.
I think everyone should see this movie. We need to deliver a message to Hollywood that smart, carefully-crafted movies will have an audience. E and I both noticed that the advertisements for Fiction played up the humorous side of the film, which is OK. I hope that it's a successful tactic for getting people to come for dessert and stay for the meal, so-to-speak.

Loose Change
I recently recived a link to this video via email. It's an hour and a half of critical analysis of what happened leading up to, during, and immediately after the attacks of September 11, 2001.
Loose Change (2nd Edition)(Google Video)
I have always been a little skeptical of the offical story of the events of 9/11/01, but I don't have nearly enough faith in the government's abilities to organize and execute a massive conspiracy, especially one involving so many civilians, without word getting out.
I have to admit, however, that the makers of this video do bring to light some very valid contradictions to the offical story. Using interviews taken that day, compared to interviews from later, the opinions of experts in a varity of fields, and the footage itself, they paint a picture that's far more complex than men with box cutters.
A lot of the "mysterious circumstances" the video posits could probably be explained by much more... mundane reasons that just haven't been discovered or considered. But some, such as the Pentagon crash site, and the Pennsylvania crash site just can't be explained away.
Do I believe the official version of the events of that day? No. Do I believe that this government/financial conspiracy theory is all there is to the story? No. I believe that the truth lies somewhere inbetween. Much like a Pearl Harbor for the twenty-first centry, I would not be surprised if the government used the knowledge of impending attacks to its advantage, but I don't think they have the wherewithall to plot and execute this whole ordeal.
You should watch this movie. Everyone should watch this movie. Not because I feel that everyone should believe it, but because everyone needs to question what happened that day. We need to plant that seed of doubt across the country so that someday, we can be more critical of ourselves.

And so Line Noise returns to the world of the living (so to speak) and that makes me happy. There are benefits to having an S.O. who can't pass up a great deal on hosting ;) What this means, of course, is that Line Noise finally has a semi-permanent home. For the next two years, at least. The url might change, as I've a passing fancy to get mt own domain, but right now that's not really a priority. I'll keep you updated.
So update your bookmarks (as if you have them) and keep reading, as I'm sure there will be more to come!

selfish birthday post
SO. I've been asked what I want for my birthday (Oct 13, fyi) and when I realized I had no idea, I figured it was time for me to revisit my Amazon wish list. I still wouldn't say that this is accurate, as browsing Amazon is like drinking from a firehose, but at least it's something. Right.
Apparently one can't link to wishlists anymore, so you'll have to search for my name first and last, and I'm listed as living in the 'burg.
Otherwise, Best Buy, Borders, IKEA, Target, Innkeepers, Starbucks, Cost Plus World Market, etc gift cards would rock.
Honestly, what I'd really like is to have my credit card paid off, but that's not about to happen, so I'd happily settle for a little distraction.
Ok. that's enough of this. I'm feeling selfish and grimy now.

home, sweet home
... or something like it...
I'd say I'm just about settled in to our apartment, and because my mom wanted photos, I figured I'd put them here for everyone's amusement.
the livingroom from the door
the livingroom from the kitchen
our little kitchen
the bedroom from the door
The photos defiantely don't do justice to how big this place actually is. Both the living room and bedroom are more than twice the size of the room I lived in last year (and I thought that was big!) and the closet, OMG the closet, is roughly the size of the room I lived in sophomore year. I now understand why over-loads turn it into another bedroom! Our kitchen is small, but serviceable and CLEAN. I still can't get over how nice it is to have a place for everything, as opposed to having it all in the same room. We have a coat closet, linen closet, etc etc. It's refreshing to feel like I've finally got a home.

My first scenic design model is done. It's a relief, definately. There's room for improvement, but I'm pretty proud of it. The show's Oedipus Rex, the style is classical, but not your usual white stone and clean lines. It's neglected and overgrown. (I figured the Thebians have been a little too distracted to trim bushes etc for a while.)

(And if you happen to know what template it's in, that could be useful information, too.) So keep your eyes open for me? thanks.

Since I've been attracting blog spammers like crazy lately, I've decided to take
down links to the pages of friends and associates, as they are no doubt just
funneling bad traffic their way. If you miss a link or something, lemmie know
and I'll figure out a way to bring it back somehow. I say that like anyone
actually will. heh.
Also, I appear to be the last of the Polyglut blogs. Because of this, the
Polyglut links have been removed from the nav bar. I honestly don't know what's
going to happen to me; there might be a move, I might be able to squat. We'll
see. A move is really appealing (reference above spammers) and I'm sure

have a lot of until the end of this month.

What do you think these lyrics mean? Please tell me. I need to know.
"Think About Me" - The Goo Goo Dolls
You take a lot of chances with your feelings
No one really knows what you feel
Fixing is the only way you're dealin'
You turn your pretty head and think it's real
[Chorus]
Oh, you
(You)
You take it so slowly
And your eyes look so lonely
But it's only when you think about me
Oh, yeah
When you think about me
Think about me
And I got ahead
Don't let me speak
And you got a secret I can't keep
You see a little stranger in your mirror
The guy you never knew is what you fear
[Chorus]
And all you want is something I can't be
All you want from me is what you need
And now I'm saying I don't know
You take it so slowly
And your eyes look so lonely
But it's only
(But it's only)
Oh, you
(Oh, you)
You take it so slowly
And it's only
(And it's only)
'Bout me
When you think about me
Think about me
Oh, when you think about me
Oh, yeah
When you think about me
(Oh, yeah)
Think about me
Yeah, when you think about me

A Rose by Any Other Name...
I now have brand spanking new (and apparently much coveted) Gmail account. I've
been poking at it for a while now and I really like the user interface. It's the
only webmail client that I actually like, although that doesn't mean that
I would't switch to a local client the minute they release one.
Thinking of correspondences in terms of coversations is initially quite a shift
in thinking, but it's an idea that makes much more sense then "sent" and
"recieved" - it's a super-threading sort of thing to which I'd not been exposed
before. The "labels" idea is externally not very different from named folders,
but labels allow you to apply more than one description to a conversation and
classify entire conversations at once. How cool is that?
One issue on which I'm still undecided is that of the advertisements. To be
completely honest, I haven't really noticed them all that much, and when I have,
I haven't found them all that relevant at all to the contents of the email.
Strange, coming from Google and all. As they take up screen realestate that's
usually blank in webmail clients away, I don't care much. At thi spoint I still
trust Google not to obscond with any important emailed info (i.e paypal etc) so
I'm not gonna complain.
Anyway, enough yammering about gmail. The address:
Bet you saw that one coming...

House Update
An entry containing an update on the house reconstruction, family matters, etc.
I realize that my neglegence as of late has been a bit unfair to the people that
read here looking for updates on how the house business is going so now, I
present to you *fanfare* The House Update.
Well, it's been a long 8 months, but things are finally starting to come back
together. After fiddling a little with the floor plan of the upstairs a little
(made the bathroom bigger at the expense of the laundry room and gave the master
bedroom closets at the expense of the guest room) construction is almost over
and finishing has begun.
All of the original moulding for the house was kept and refinished. The
downstairs recieved a new hardwood floor. The kitchen has been remodeled a bit,
seeing a new sink and something we'd never thought we'd have: cabinents.
The biggest changes are in the basement, where the fire started. The basement
has now been divided up into separate rooms for the athletic equipment, TV/Video
games (possibly with the old big screen. iirc, it survived,) storage and
furnace/utilities.
As things are starting to come together, it's looking more and more like the
house that it used to be, but less and less at the same time. It's strange for
me, especially, as I've been away for so long, to come back now and wander
though the newly plastered and drywalled downstairs then up to the clean, but
messy and not-quite-so-done upstairs. I know that all of this redesigning and
replanning has been hard on Mom, but I also know that she's seeing it as a
chance to express herself and have a little fun. She seems proud of what she's
come up with and from what I can see of it in my head, I think it will look
great. Different, but great.
In terms of logistics, we're just a few weeks away from being home. As I
mentioned, they've got most of the painting down on the reconstructed downstairs
and they're cleaning and priming the upstairs. The appliances, accessories etc
have already been ordered and are waiting for delivery. The floor is to be
finished (sanded and stained) at the beginning of next week when the major
painting is done. As the pros are working, mom's been working on textured
finishes and the ceilings and they're looking great.
The official move-in date is July 7. That's when we lose our condo for good and
return to home-sweet-home. A bit after that, once we're settled in, we're hoping
to have a bit of "whew, we're back" open house and party. (So, end of July-ish.)
I'm hoping to get a chance, before the open house, to put together a scrap book
of before, during, and after shots. I think it will be really interesting for
people to look through, and I think the doing so will help me with the whole
'closure' thing. If you're interested in coming, let me know and I'll make sure
to keep you informed.
So that's basically it. Goodnight all.

The Draft is Scary
An open letter to my congress-people, in response to the consideration of a
draft reinstatement in early 2005:
I'm writing to urge you to deny the reinstitution of the draft. I personally
feel that a draft is an illogical and damaging tool. If a war waged by the
United States is truly worth fighting, then the guiding principles that lead to
conflict will drive the people to support it on their own, without being forced
to do so. By forcing the young men and women of the United States to risk their
lives for a cause they do not support, they are only rallied against the nation
created to defend them and their freedoms. By pulling the nation's students out
of college and into combat, you drastically reduce their chances of ever
finishing their education and becoming the experienced leaders of tomorrow.
The Nation's capital does not need another monument remembering thousands of
fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, sisters and bothers lost to cause they do not
support. Please vote no.

If Bette Midler agrees...
I have many thoughts on the current DMA business, but I've blathered about them
so much to so many people lately, that I really don't want to do it here right
now. I will, however, mention that I wrote a letter to the editor of The
Paper in response to a column in this week's issue (updates if I get printed)
and I will post the following letter in my extended entry: an open letter from
Bette Midler to the president regarding the issue at hand. She is currently far
better spoken than I.
Dear President Bush,
Today you called upon Congress to move quickly to amend the US Constitution, and
set in Federal stone a legal definition of marriage. I would like to know why.
In your speech, you stated that this Amendment would serve to protect
marriage in America, which I must confess confuses me. Like you, I believe
in the importance of marriage and I feel that we as a society take the
institution far too lightly. In my circle of family, friends and
acquaintances, the vast majority have married and divorced - some more than
once. Still, I believe in marriage. I believe that there is something
fundamental about finding another person on this planet with whom you want
to build a life and family, and make a positive contribution to society. I
believe that we need more positive role models for successful marriage in
this country - something to counteract the images we get bombarded with in
popular culture. When we are assaulted with images of celebrities of varying
genres, be it actors, sports figures, socialites, or even politicians who shrug
marriage on and off like the latest fashion, it is vitally important to the face
of our nation, for our children and our future, that we have a balance of
commitment and fidelity with which to stave off the negativity.
I search for these examples to show my own daughter, so that she can see that
marriage is more than a disposable whim, despite overwhelming evidence to the
contrary.
As a father, I'm sure you have faced these same concerns and difficulties in
raising your own daughters. Therefore I can also imagine that you must
understand how thrilled I have been over the past few weeks to come home and
turn on the news with my family. To finally have concrete examples of true
commitment, honest love, and steadfast fidelity was such a relief and a joy.
Instead of speaking in the hypothetical, I was finally able to point to these
men and women, standing together for hours in the pouring rain, and tell my
child that this is what its all about. Forget Britney. Forget Kobe.
Forget Strom. Forget about all the people that we know who have taken so
frivolously the pure and simple beauty of love and tarnished it so
consistently. Look instead at the joy in the beautiful faces of Del Martin
and Phyllis Lyon 51 years together! I mean, honestly Mr. President - how
many couples do you know who are together for 51 years? I'm sure you agree
that this love story provides a wonderful opportunity to teach our children
about the true meaning and value of marriage. On the steps of San Francisco
City Hall, rose petals and champagne, suits and veils, horns honking and
elation in the streets; a celebration of love the likes of which this
society has never seen.
This morning, however, my joy turned to sadness, my relief transformed into
outrage, and my peace became anger. This morning, I watched you stand before
this nation and belittle these women, the thousands who stood with them, and the
countless millions who wish to follow them. How could you do that, Mr. President?
How could you take something so beautiful - a clear and defining example of the
true nature of commitment - and declare it to be anything less? What is it that
validates your marriage which somehow doesn't apply to Del Martin and Phyllis
Lyon? By what power, what authority are you so divinely imbued that you can
stand before me and this nation and hold their love to a higher standard?
Don't speak to me about homosexuality, Mr. President. Don't tell me that the
difference lies in the bedroom. I would never presume to ask you or your wife
how it is you choose to physically express your love for one another, and I defy
you to stand before Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon and ask them to do the same. It
is none of my business, as it is none of yours, and it has nothing to do with
the "sanctity of marriage". I'm sure you would agree that marriage is far more
than sexual expression, and its high time we all started focusing on all the
other aspects of a relationship which hold it together over the course of a
lifetime. Therefore, with the mechanics of sex set aside, I ask you again - what
makes a marriage? I firmly believe that whatever definition you derive, there
are thousands upon thousands of shining examples for you to embrace.
You want to protect marriage. I admire and support that, Mr. President.
Together, as a nation, let us find and celebrate examples of what a marriage
should be. Together, let us take couples who embody the principles of commitment,
fidelity, sacrifice and love, and hold them up before our children as role
models for their own futures. Together, let us reinforce the concept that love
is about far more than sex, despite what popular culture would like them to
believe.
Please, for the sake of our children, for the sake of our society, for the
sake of our future, do not take us down this road. Under the guise of
protection, do not support divisiveness. Under the guise of unity, do not
endorse discrimination. Under the guise of sanctity, do not devalue
commitment. Under the guise of democracy, do not encourage this amendment.

more on this when I don't have to go to class.
UPDATED:
I'm getting really frustrated with people who say they "just can't do
computers." Most of the people I know are more than smart enough to understand
the basic principles behind their functioning. It might be true that they don't
have the familarity or vocabulary that some people have, how else would you
expect to get good at something by anything other than doing it? I'm not saying
that everyone should be a genius (it would put support techs out of business,
wouldn't it?) but what I am saying is that if you use such a powerful tool on a
daily basis, you should feel a simple responsibility to understand what you're
doing- not just follow a script. Be familar with the programs you use on a
regular basis, pay attention to what you're doing when someone tells you how to
do something and just PLAY WITH IT. If you don't know about Word, open a new
document, type some text, and explore the menus. See what you can do, see where
it is. If you come across a preferences or options screen, read it, learn about
what each one does. I have only taken one "Computer Science" course in my life.
Everything I know, I've learned this way. And you are NOT "too old."
I think I'm going to make an addition to my "No, I will not fix your computer"
shirt: "You can fix it yourself."

Programs that, when installed, stick shortcuts everywhere. If I'd wanted
a shortcut there, I would have put it there. THANK YOU.

scary? funny? take your pick
From

If you find an Atheist in your neighborhood,
TELL A PARENT OR PASTOR RIGHT AWAY!
You may be moved to try and witness to
these poor lost souls yourself, however
AVOID TALKING TO THEM!
Atheists are often very grumpy and bitter and will lash out at children or they
may even try to trick you into neglecting God's Word.
Very advanced witnessing techniques are needed for these grouches. Let the
adults handle them.

yummy
I just made a *fantastic* dinner. Ramen (none of the "flavor packet!",) peas, carrots, rice and some chicken/chicken broth. SOOOO good. Much Much better than the caf. I'm glad that I went grocery shopping. (Not to mention the Eagle going-out-of-business sale so everything's CHEAP.) Try it, it's yummy.

if you're curious
I've gotten a few comments about my "first initial" references. I'm doing it to,
as Chris put it, "not feed the google monster" and protect the privacy of my
friends a bit. If you're curious about who someone is, ask. I'm just
uncomfortable spreading names around the internet.
I hope you understand. :)

got distracted...
Ten Signs You've been in Theatre too long:
- Your weekend consists of Monday and only Monday
- "Q" is not just a letter.
- You can only read from a light that is blue.
- You feel naked without your keys, cellphone, MagLite, Leatherman and Gerber on your belt.
- You know tie-line has many uses: shoelaces, belts, ponytail holders....
- You tell more stories of things gone wrong than what went smoothly
- You know anything can be fixed with gaff, a sharpie, hot-glue, tie-line and a safety pin
- People recognize you by the sound of your keys jingling down the hallway.
- "Practical" and "flat" are nouns.
- If someone asks you what time it is, you respond with something like, "Half hour 'til half hour"
Some of these were blatently stolen, so if you know the original author, please
tell me.

So now it's official
Alright, so now this exists to those other than myself and Chris, he's probably the only one reading :P I guess that would make sense as he *is* the only one hat knows about it. Unless of course he's told someone, but that would be silly, wouldn't it?
I'm still trying to decide if I want to use this on a regular basis or not. I just might. Why not? Once I get it looking decently to my satisfaction. I've still got to see what all this can do... Anyway. 'nuf out of me. Back to poking around.
